About the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD)

Like any parent, you want to make sure your child is headed to a safe and caring environment when she leaves home for class. After all, kids spend most of their waking hours in school.

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) strives to create a school setting where children can reach their full potential, cultivate their interests, and build lasting friendships.

The district encompasses over 900 schools and 187 public charter schools, making it the second largest in the country.

115 new schools and campuses have joined since its inception in 1853, along with a single-gender STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) school for girls in 2016 and another in 2017, for boys.

The city of Los Angeles, as well as a number of South California’s smaller municipalities and unincorporated sections, is zoned to LAUSD.

Performance

LAUSD is no slouch – it boasts double-digit growth when it comes to the state Academic Performance Index (API), and an uptick in the graduation rate and passing rate for the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE).

The district’s performance goals include:

  • 100 percent graduation
  • 100 percent attendance
  • Proficiency for all
  • School safety
  • Parent and community engagement

The Performance Management Unit makes use of the LAUSD Performance Meter to measure the district’s capabilities.

Five strategies are also in place to help the district actualize its mission:

  • Transform teaching and learning so that we prepare all youth to graduate college and workforce ready.
  • Ensure there is an effective employee at every level of the organization focused on improving student outcomes.
  • Provide a portfolio of high quality schools for youth, families and communities.
  • Ensure a safe, caring, and nurturing environment for all youth.
  • Operate an effective, efficient, and transparent organization in order to assure the public trust. Budgeting for Student Achievement website.

The district’s commitment to academic excellence will help your child flourish, equipping her with the educational background she needs for college and the workforce.

Food and nutrition

Concerned about your child’s health?

LAUSD is recognized by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine for its low-fat vegetarian school lunches. The meals here are typically low sodium, with no trans fat. Kids can have a tasty meal of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, then wash it down with flavored milk or carbonated beverages.

The district has also adopted Cornell University’s Smarter Lunchrooms program. Using the same techniques that get restaurant diners to eat more, the program encourages students to eat the healthy food that’s available to them.

Aside from food variety, appealing menus and colorful food packaging pique their interest and keep them from skipping meals.

Kids on the move can also pick up some grab-and-go meals offered at key locations all over campus. This means you won’t have to worry about your child taking an exam on an empty stomach, nor will their diet suffer when they hit the school cafeteria.

Students may apply for either free or reduced meal price eligibility at the start of each year. Even if your child doesn’t qualify, the district’s LA Café program offers great value – fresh and balanced meals for as low as $3.
