There are two version to this recipe.
My Version:
Boil fish for 10 minutes and cool
slice onions and put in container
lay salmon on top of onions
boil: 1 C vinegar, 1 C water, 1/2 C sugar, 10 oz ketchup, salt and pour over fish/onions and marinate (I doubled sauce)
My Mother’s Version:
Cook 3 onions sliced and 1 1/2 C sugar on a low flame (recipe says 15 minutes but I did it for an hour)
Add 1 1/2 C sugar, 1 C water, 1/2 C vinegar, 6 peppercorns, 6 bay leaves, 2 tsp sale
Add fish to pot and cook for 25 minutes (I did it for a little less)
Put in container and let marinate in fridge.
(I doubled the whole thing.)
