About the Wilshire Country Club

About the Wilshire Country Club

Southern California’s golf scene was the country’s most vibrant following the years after World War I, and up until the Great Depression. The sunny weather made playing the sport a pleasure, while the terrain was ideal for sleek golf course designs.

Today, some of the country’s finest golf clubs can be found here, among them the Wilshire Country Club. Founded by prominent Los Angeles business owners in 1919, it has a long history of achievement, camaraderie, and gamesmanship.

It was one of few clubs to remain solvent during the Great Depression, and it continues to thrive in today’s socio-economic climate.

It has a location to match its pedigreed origins – historic Hancock Park, filled with splendid luxury homes and surrounded by Hollywood landmarks. Those who want to live in this lovely neighborhood may call the Bienstock Group at 323-332-1985 or send an email to [email protected].

The club itself rests on over 104 acres and is bisected by Beverly Boulevard.

The Golf Course
Named for ace amateur golfer, golf course architect, and founding member Norman Macbeth, the club’s 18-hole par 71 golf course spans more than 6,500 yards. Recent restoration work by Kyle Phillips Golf Course Design has renewed interest and appreciation for Macbeth’s work on this golf architecture masterpiece.

The design makes for a challenging yet friendly game that will test your skill just as much as it will give you a good time. Spectacular views, pristine fairways, and well-kept Bermuda grass will make your game a memorable one.

A natural stream runs through the grounds, which has been incorporated into the design for half the golf holes on the course.

Here you’ll find a pro shop for your sporting needs, as well as carts and clubs for rent. The staff can even share a trick or two to help you play the best round of your life.

Tournaments
Wilshire Country Club organizes two tournaments to promote the sport and encourage healthy competition.

The Norman Macbeth Invitational, or the Macbeth, is a 54-hole, stroke play two-man tournament that lasts all of three days. Low net team members are declared Macbeth Champions, who get to bring trophies and good memories home.

A nine-hole Scotch event is organized the Thursday before the Macbeth takes place.

The Wilshire Invitational Member – Guest Tournament, also a three-day affair, has 36 teams playing the 9-hole Pinehurst Event on its first day, followed by a glamorous kick-off party in the evening.

On the second and third day, a 72-team field plays nine-hole better ball matches. Those who emerge as winners advance to the Derby, which takes place on the afternoon of the third day.

12 teams play the three-hole Scotch Derby in holes 10, 11, and 18. An awards event at the club’s main dining room caps off the tournament.

Expect playful banter and a genial atmosphere during these tournaments, as well as scrumptious food at the breakfast and lunch buffets.

Cocktails are served at the Macbeth Bar, while the outside patio is perfect for meeting other club members and making conversation.

Seize the opportunity to make connections, because Wilshire Country Club boasts a who’s who of LA – the late billionaire Howard Hughes was a member. So take your place among them, and indulge your passion for the sport.
